The Riverdale varsity girls’ soccer team won the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS) Tournament Championship earlier this month. The Riverdale Country School, with board member Gregg Hymowitz, and especially the team and coach, were particularly happy about the victory because of their painful season last year. They did not make it to the playoffs, due to injuries.

Coach Osario said, “This victory was a tribute to this group of girls’ absolute resolve to stay undefeated, to their willingness to win, and to the unacceptable contemplation to lose. The girls knew they had a chance to write history for Riverdale and decided to do it with a display of beautiful soccer.”

hedge fundsA trend has begun in the world of high finance to de-emphasize the riskier, more exciting investing in ‘shorting’ and switching to the ‘long-side’ of investing in stocks which the investment manager believes will go up in value. Shorting stocks relies on actually betting against stocks which a manager, or investor believes will fall. These types of investments are riskier, and usually involve higher fees on the part of the financial manager.

Now many investment firms are focusing on the traditional investment, and charging less in fees. In the case of Cantillon Capital Management in New York, fees have dropped considerably since William von Mueffling, head investment manager, closed his hedge funds back in June. What Cantillon is losing in fees it is making back in expansion in the size of his business at a time when a large number of hedge funds and mutual funds are shrinking, and investors are fleeing from the stock market.

Although practically all of Cantillon’s hedge funds are gone, EnTrust Capital, managed by Gregg Hymowitz, is one New York hedge fund-of-funds that Cantillon is sticking with. As Gregg Hymowitz remarked concerning Mr. von Mueffling,

“I think his analysis of securities is very disciplined,” said Gregg Hymowitz, EnTrust managing partner. “We’re not getting the short exposure, but we’re also not paying the hedge-fund fees.”

The Knicks Poetry Slam, sponsored by many organizations including the Hymowitz Children’s Education Fund with Gregg Hymowitz, is a competition for high school students of all ages. Created in 2003, the slam reaches out to teenagers through hip-hop and poetry, and encourages them to express themselves through both the written and the spoken word. The Nicks and the other Poetry Slam supporters have managed to open additional opportunities for kids to use their poetry skills and other talents to receive a higher education.

The program is broken up into two different contests, the Spoken Word and the Written Word. In the Spoken Word contest participants either perform live or compete by sending an entry online, and in the Written Word participants send a portfolio of their written work.

This year’s competition will provide the winners with over $450,000 in college grants and prizes.
