A new humanitarian award was recently established by the Riverdale Country School Board of Trustee member Gregg Hymowitz.  His goal, with this award, was to introduce the student body each year to a different “hero” who had made a substantial impact on the world with his or her leadership and courage.

To nominate heroes, students submitted written proposals.  Seven finalists were selected and the students then presented their proposals to the Head of School, the Head of the Upper School, the Director of Studies and trustee Gregg Hymowitz.

As Gregg Hymowitz says, “I am thrilled that Riverdale will honor each year a new individual, chosen by students, whose life exemplifies the core values of the Riverdale community.

The first winner of the award was Leymah Gbowee.  Nominated by Rachel Wolitzer, Ms. Gbowee is a leader of the Women in Peacebuilding Network (WIPNET).  She brought together Christian and Muslim women to form the Liberian Mass Action for Peace and to help end the bloody civil war in Liberia.

Binghamton University is certainly excited about a recent grant. They were just awarded a 4-year, $1.4 million grant by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) to put towards funding of undergraduate interdisciplinary research.  The research is to focus on solving problems in the life sciences.

There were 197 institutions around the country that could have received a grant, and only 50 research-focused universities were awarded these grants.  Binghamton and Stony Brook were the only two SUNY schools that were recognized.

As President of Binghamton, where EnTrust Capital Managing Partner Gregg Hymowitz graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a B.A., Lois B. DeFleur said,  “I’m very proud that Binghamton won this prestigious award. The application process is highly competitive and I commend the faculty and staff who worked to develop this program. Their tireless efforts will benefit our undergraduates enormously.”

Certainly, many high school students just assume that they will be attending college.  Others, however, do not.  A college fair can make a large difference in a student’s life, opening his eyes to the possibilities before him and encouraging him to think about college opportunities.

One organization, The Big Apple College Information Program, has been helping NYC and the surrounding area high school students to discover new educational opportunities for 29 years.  They host major college fairs and have informational programs to help students to see their many college options.

As one of the sponsors of the Knicks Poetry Slam, along with Gregg Hymowitz of the The Hymowitz Children’s Education Foundation, Inc., the New York Knicks, the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and Urban Word, NYC, they help students to see possibilities for their futures in many ways.
