In 1985 Gregg Hymowitz was one of five recipients from the state of New York of the coveted Harry S. Truman Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to those who have shown potential to make a difference in the future in the world of public service.
The process of becoming a Truman Scholar begins in the sophomore year of aspiring students, where they compete on their home campuses for one of only four of their school’s nominations. These chosen four then compete nationwide with approximately 600 applicants who were selected from campuses all over the United States.
Out of this group of highly motivated and qualified students, only between 60 and 65 are actually chosen to receive the honor. These students, who are now college juniors, have been shown to show extraordinary leadership potential and are committed to careers in the public sector, whether it is in government, education, the nonprofit realm, or other areas affecting the greater community.
